Lote New Testament (UVLUVL)
Overview
The Lote New Testament was completed in November 2008 after 23 years of translation work and launched at a celebration in Uvol, East New Britain Province, on January 9, 2010, with approximately one thousand people in attendance [1]. Lote (formerly known as Uvol, after the name of a local river) is a Western Oceanic Austronesian language spoken by approximately 5,500 to 6,000 people living in scattered, remote villages around Cape Dampier on the south coast of New Britain in Papua New Guinea [2]. The translation was directed by Greg and Mary Pearson, members of Wycliffe Bible Translators USA and the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL), who began the language program in 1986 when Lote had no written form [1]. The Pearsons analyzed Lote phonology and grammar, established literacy training, and taught community members to read and write their language, with the book of Mark published in 1993 and an abridgement of Genesis in 1997 [1]. The completed New Testament was printed in Korea and distributed under the vernacular title "Tomunga Hel Heueu Ngana" [3].
