Waci Gbe New Testament (WCIWYT)
Overview
The Waci Gbe New Testament was produced by Wycliffe Togo, the Togolese partner organization of the Wycliffe Global Alliance. Audio New Testament content is accessible through Faith Comes By Hearing. A parallel translation for speakers in Benin was also produced by Wycliffe Benin. Scripture portions in Waci Gbe have been available through Global Recordings Network, and no complete Bible has been reported for this language. This translation brings the New Testament to speakers of one of the larger Gbe languages of the Slave Coast region.
Language and People
Waci Gbe (ISO 639-3: wci), also known as Oatchi, Watchi, or Gbe Waci, is a member of the Gbe language cluster within the Kwa branch of the Niger-Congo family, closely related to Ewe and Fon. It is spoken by approximately 1,125,000 people across two countries: approximately 1,050,000 in Togo (primarily in the Maritime Region) and 75,000 in southeastern Benin. Waci Gbe is the mother tongue of the Watchi people and is distinct from standard Ewe, though the two languages share significant mutual intelligibility. The language is used as a first language by all within the ethnic community.
