Wedau Mark (WEDWBT)

Overview

The Wedau Mark, titled Wedau Topura Mark, contains the Gospel of Mark in the Topura dialect of the Wedau language of Papua New Guinea, published in 2010 by Wycliffe Bible Translators. [1] Wedau is an Austronesian (Oceanic) language spoken in Milne Bay Province, part of the broader Taupota dialect chain. [2] The Wedau language holds historical significance as the variety adopted by Anglican missionaries who settled at Dogura in the 1890s, where it became the lingua franca for the southern coast of Goodenough Bay. [3] Early liturgical translations into Wedau were among the first missionary linguistic work in the region, with pioneers such as Copland King documenting theological terms in the language as early as 1913. [4] This modern translation by Wycliffe provides the Gospel of Mark specifically in the Topura dialect for contemporary readers.
