Warapu Bible (WRAWBV)
Overview
The Warapu Bible is one of four Scripture translations produced for the Warapu (Bauni) language cluster of Sandaun Province, Papua New Guinea. "Warapu" serves as a cover term for a group of closely related Sko-family languages spoken in and around the villages of Barupu (Warapu), Poo, Ramo, and Sumo on the northwest coast near Sissano Lagoon. This version (WRAWBV) represents the primary or general Warapu text. Audio New Testament content is accessible through Faith Comes By Hearing. Three additional dialect-specific translations have also been produced: Warapu Bible (Bouni Pou, WRAWPV), Warapu Bible (Ramo, WRAWRV), and Bauni Bible (WRAWSV, 2018).
Language and People
Warapu (ISO 639-3: wra) is a Papuan language of the Sko family (Barupu Lagoon subfamily), spoken in Barupu (Warapu) village in West Aitape Rural LLG, Sandaun Province, Papua New Guinea. The language cluster includes the Barapu-Warapu and Pou dialects of Bauni (wra), as well as the related languages Bouni-Bobe (suo) and Uni (uni), spoken in adjacent villages. The communities are indigenous to the area near Sera and the Sissano coast, northwest peninsula of Sissano Lagoon. The region was severely affected by the 1998 Sissano tsunami, one of the deadliest natural disasters in Papua New Guinean history, which devastated the coastal villages and displaced many communities. Speaker populations are small — estimated at a few hundred to low thousands across all related varieties.
