Soga BSU Version (XOGBSU)
Overview
The Baibuli Ekibono kya Katonda is a New Testament in the Lusoga (Soga) language, published in 2014 by the Bible Society of Uganda. [1] This was identified as the first full translation into Lusoga, serving the Basoga people of the Busoga region in eastern Uganda. [2] Lusoga had earlier Scripture portions dating from as early as 1896, and a New Testament was completed in 1999, but this 2014 edition represents an updated translation. [3] The Bible Society of Uganda has translated the Bible into 21 local languages, and a complete Lusoga Bible (including Old Testament) was subsequently completed between 2014 and 2020. [2] [3]
Language and People
Soga (ISO 639-3: xog), also known as Lusoga, is a Bantu language spoken by approximately 2,960,000 people in Uganda. [Glottolog: soga1242] The Basoga (Soga people) inhabit the Busoga region of eastern Uganda, bounded by Lake Victoria to the south, Lake Kyoga to the north, the Victoria Nile to the west, and the Mpologoma River to the east. [4] Busoga's written history dates to 1862, when explorer John Hanning Speke reached the region. [4] The written form of Lusoga only emerged with the arrival of Arab and European traders and missionaries in the second half of the nineteenth century. [5] The first Church Missionary Society (CMS) mission station in Busoga was established in January 1891, with Sembera Mackay playing a key role in bringing Christianity to the region. [6]
