Tarok Bible (YEREBL)
Overview
The Tarok Bible is a partial Bible in the Tarok language (ISO 639-3: yer), containing 32 books including Old Testament portions (Exodus, Leviticus, Joshua through 2 Samuel, Ezekiel, Hosea, Amos, Haggai, Zechariah) and most New Testament epistles and Acts. It was published by the Luke Initiative for Scripture Translation (LIST). Tarok is a Plateau language spoken by an estimated 150,000 people in the Langtang area of southeastern Plateau State, Nigeria, where it serves as a local lingua franca. [1] The Tarok people (who call themselves oTarok) are found principally in Langtang-North, Langtang-South, Wase, Mikang, and Kanke Local Government Areas. [2] Although approximately 70% of the Tarok are Christian, the community had access only to a New Testament since 1988 and lacked the full Bible in their language. [3] The broader Tarok Bible translation effort has faced significant challenges, including the kidnapping of a Seed Company project coordinator in Jos in December 2010 during a period of regional violence.
