Riang Lai Scripture Portions
Overview
The Riang Lai scripture portion is the Gospel of Luke (with audio) in the Riang Lai (Yinchia) language of Myanmar's Shan State, published by the Dhamma Mate Swe Association (DMS) in 2024 and available via YouVersion/Bible.com (ID 4176; abbreviation: RTPV-RV). This publication is part of a 2024 DMS initiative that produced Gospel portions — typically Luke with audio — in 18 or more Myanmar ethnic minority languages simultaneously, providing first-ever heart-language Scripture to communities in Shan State and surrounding regions.
Correction of a common classification error: Despite the colonial-era Burmese nickname "Black Karen" (Yinchia = Black + Riang), the Riang Lai people are not Karenic. Their language belongs to the Austro-Asiatic family, not Tibeto-Burman/Sino-Tibetan.
Language and People
Riang Lai (ISO 639-3: yin; autonym: Yinchia — "Black Riang," distinguishing them from the Riang Lang "Red Riang") is an Austro-Asiatic language in the Palaungic branch of Khasi-Palaungic. The Riang people are ethnically related to the Palaung, from whom they diverged over centuries. Riang Lai (Yinchia) and Riang Lang (Yinnet) are sometimes classified as distinct languages, both under ISO code yin under current SIL classification.
The Riang Lai community lives in Shan State, Myanmar, primarily in Namsan and Mantong Townships within the Palaung Self-Administered Zone. Villages include Maemunglon, Saimon, Sam Kha, and Kon Pung. Speakers are also found in Yunnan Province, China.
Estimated speakers: approximately 13,000 (Joshua Project Myanmar figure); the broader Riang language (both Riang Lai and Riang Lang) was estimated at ~28,000–49,000 total. The language is classified as endangered and decreasing — adults maintain fluency, but younger generations shift toward Shan or Burmese.
Religiously, the Riang Lai are predominantly followers of ethnic/traditional religion (~80%), with a Buddhist minority (~19.9%) and approximately 0.1% Christian.

Dhamma Mate Swe Association (DMS) is a Myanmar-based Bible translation organization. The name combines Burmese/Pali elements: Dhamma (ဓမ္မ, from Pali dharma) means "scripture/teaching/the Word"; Mate Swe (မိတ်ဆွေ) means "friend/companion/associate" in Burmese — yielding something like "Friends of Scripture Association." In 2024, DMS published Gospel of Luke portions (with audio) in at least 18 Myanmar ethnic minority languages across Shan State, Chin State, Kayin State, and adjacent regions, covering communities ranging from Karen sub-languages to Mon-Khmer peoples.
