Santo Domingo Albarradas Zapotec New Testament (ZASWBT)

Overview

The Santo Domingo Albarradas Zapotec New Testament, titled Xtiidx Dios, is a translation of the New Testament into the Albarradas Zapotec language, published in 2010 by Wycliffe Bible Translators. [1] The translation serves a small indigenous community in the mountainous Sierra Norte region east of Oaxaca City in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. Audio recordings of the translation were produced in 2008. [2]

Language and People

Santo Domingo Albarradas Zapotec (ISO 639-3: zas) is spoken by approximately 5,500 people in the towns of Santo Domingo Albarradas, Santa Maria Albarradas, and San Miguel Albarradas in the state of Oaxaca, southern Mexico. [3] Of these, roughly 1,500 to 2,000 speakers reside in Santo Domingo Albarradas itself. [Glottolog: sant1450]

The language belongs to the Zapotecan branch of the Oto-Manguean language family. Santo Domingo Albarradas is situated on a mountain slope at an altitude above 1,500 meters. [3] While the language remains actively spoken in Santo Domingo Albarradas, a generational shift toward Spanish is underway in the neighboring town of Santa Maria Albarradas. The Zapotec variety spoken in nearby Santa Catarina Albarradas and San Antonio Albarradas is not mutually intelligible with the Santo Domingo variety. [3]
