Gbe, Ci (also called Ci-gbe, Ayizo-Ci, or Tchi-gbe) is a Gbe language of the Volta-Niger branch of Niger-Congo, spoken by approximately 54,000 people in southern Benin. It is one of many closely related Gbe varieties spoken across the coastal belt of West Africa. Wycliffe Benin, the in-country affiliate of Wycliffe Bible Translators, produced audio recordings of the Gospel of Luke and Acts for Ci-gbe speakers. These audio portions represent the primary Scripture resource available for this language community. Benin's linguistic landscape is extraordinarily diverse, with dozens of Gbe varieties in the south alone, and Wycliffe Benin has worked to ensure that smaller language communities have access to Scripture in the language closest to their heart. The Ci-gbe community has some Christian presence, but access to Scripture in the mother tongue remains limited, making these audio portions a vital resource for churches and evangelism.
