The Griffith New Testament in Simplified Chinese (CMNGJNS)

Overview

Griffith John (Chinese: 楊格非; pinyin: Yáng Géfēi; 14 December 1831 – 25 July 1912) was a Welsh Christian missionary and translator in China. A member of the Congregational church, he was a pioneer evangelist with the London Missionary Society (LMS), a writer, and a translator of the Bible into Chinese, serving at Hankou for more than half a century. At the 1877 Shanghai Missionary Conference he argued for Bibles in language readers could actually use, and he went on to produce an Easy Wenli New Testament (1885) and a Mandarin New Testament (1889), translating from the Greek and drawing on the Peking Committee version and other Chinese antecedents. This edition presents the 1889 Mandarin text in simplified characters.
