New Chinese Version (Simplified) (CMNNCVS)

Overview

The New Chinese Version (新译本, Xīn Yì Běn) is a Mandarin Chinese Bible translation completed in 1992, notable as the first Chinese Bible translated entirely by Chinese scholars directly from the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek languages. [1] The project originated in 1972 when Chinese church leaders established the New Chinese Bible Center (later renamed the Worldwide Bible Society) to produce a faithful, contemporary Chinese translation. [2] A team of approximately 100 Chinese Bible scholars and language experts from around the world participated in the translation, under the leadership of Revs. Drs. Philip Teng, John Pao, Samuel Tang, James Taylor III, Timothy Lin, Andrew Song, and Wu Ming Chieh, with Rev. Paul Yung serving as General Secretary. [2] The New Testament was completed in 1976, and the full Bible was finished in 1992. [2] The Worldwide Bible Society was formally established in 2001 to manage the promotion and publication of the CNV. [2] The translation is available in both simplified and traditional Chinese scripts and is one of the most widely used Chinese Bible translations alongside the Chinese Union Version. [1]
