Liberia was founded in 1822 by freed African Americans from the United States and declared independence in 1847. It remained stable for over a century before descending into civil wars (1989–2003). Since then, the country has worked towards rebuilding its economy and governance, though challenges like poverty and corruption persist.
Liberia, officially the Republic of Liberia, is a country on the West African coast. It is bordered by Sierra Leone to the northwest, Guinea to the north, Côte d'Ivoire to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south and southwest. Covering an area of approximately 111,369 square kilometers, Liberia has a population of about 5.4 million people as of 2024. The capital and largest city is Monrovia. The official language is English. Liberia operates as a unitary presidential republic. Founded by freed American and Caribbean slaves in the early 19th century, Liberia declared independence on July 26, 1847, making it Africa's first and oldest modern republic. The economy is primarily based on agriculture, mining, and forestry. Liberia is known for its rich biodiversity and as one of the world's biodiversity hotspots. The country is a member of international organizations such as the United Nations, the African Union, and the Economic Community of West African States.
