Nepal has a history of ancient kingdoms, including the Malla and Shah dynasties. It unified under Prithvi Narayan Shah in the 18th century. Nepal remained an absolute monarchy until a democratic transition in 2008. It is home to Mount Everest and a unique cultural heritage, with tourism and agriculture as key economic drivers.
Nepal, officially the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, is a landlocked country in South Asia. It shares borders with China to the north and India to the south, east, and west. Covering an area of approximately 147,516 square kilometers, Nepal has a population of about 30 million people as of 2023. The capital and largest city is Kathmandu. The official language is Nepali. Nepal operates as a federal democratic republic. The economy is primarily based on agriculture, tourism, and remittances from Nepali workers abroad. Nepal is renowned for its diverse geography, including the Himalayas, home to eight of the world's ten highest peaks, including Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth. The country is a member of international organizations such as the United Nations, the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), and the World Trade Organization.
