Timor-Leste, also known as East Timor, is a country in Southeast Asia, occupying the eastern half of the island of Timor, the nearby islands of Atauro and Jaco, and the exclave of Oecusse on the northwestern side of the island within Indonesian West Timor. Covering an area of approximately 14,874 square kilometers, it has a population of about 1.3 million people as of 2023. The capital and largest city is Dili. The official languages are Tetum and Portuguese. Timor-Leste operates as a unitary semi-presidential republic. The economy is primarily based on oil and gas exports, with agriculture also playing a significant role. Timor-Leste is known for its rich cultural heritage, diverse marine life, and as one of the newest sovereign states, having gained independence in 2002. The country is a member of international organizations such as the United Nations, the Community of Portuguese Language Countries, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
